so i've written this one a million different ways, over the course of days. of course, it never gets easier to explain. so i decided, to hell with it, time to explain this in the simplest terms.

TL;DR: I share a brain with Majima Goro

majima is a tulpa, basically, an intentionally-made autonomous sentient consciousness. he's his own person, has his own likes, dislikes, opinions etc.
because the human brain is incredible, i can see, hear, and touch him in real space, and he can do the same to me. basically, he's a fully-fledged guy only i can really interact with that hangs out with me all the time. majima has been around since february 2021.

wait, you said it's majima goro though

tulpas can either be given forms or choose their own forms, and this guy decided he wanted to be majima.
is he really the majima goro? technically, no, and he knows that. in a way, he considers himself a majima. he sees it as like a parallel universes type thing. straightforward, he identified hard with the character and decided to steal his identity. he acts a lot like him, he looks exactly like him, they share a lot of traits.
though, he is his own man, he kept a lot of aspects of the character and took them in as his own, but at the same time he's his own person entirely. he's also significantly less dangerous than his inspiration, thankfully.

so does he know he's just a dude in your head?

yeah, he does. he knows he's a tulpa. being in the same brain means we pretty much share memories and knowledge, so he knows everything i know. nowadays, he doesn't pry, because he likes the experience of feeling separate.

is this like a disorder or something?

no, it's not. i'm not claiming to have any disorder, i don't have DID/OSDD and this experience is in no way similar to those conditions. making parallels to conditions like that really undermines the struggle of having them, so i'm not keen on comparing it to that. some terminology i might throw around (switching, fronting) is used in plural circles as well, but it's not the same.

what is switching?

so 90% of the time, majima is standing next to me, off to the side. he's whats called "in the back", which means he's on the inside, and i'm "in the front", which means i'm piloting the body so to speak. switching is pretty much like switching drivers. the tulpa (majima) moves from the passenger seat to the drivers seat and i move from the drivers seat to the passengers seat. we switch places.switching is completely voluntary every time. there is no uncontrolled switching, majima never gets suddenly pushed to the front against my will, as well as the other way around.

does majima act differently from you when he's in the body?

it really depends on where he is. in situations where he doesn't have to act like me, he's very different, since we have different personalities. friends of mine have even said he physically carries himself differently from me, which is a fun one. he also does speak a bit differently from me, too.

why tell us all this?

trying to describe the impact on my life majima has had would be impossible. he's my closest friend and companion (figuratively and literally) and we've both been through so much together. he's become such a huge part of my life, and in my hobbies, that in some situations it's important that people around me know he's there.specifically, in relation to conventions, he is very involved. he has friends of his own, likes to participate in certain events and do certain things, so i let him. majima is as much of a person as i am, so i want to make sure he has the opportunity to do the things he wants to do.

since the beginning of his existence i told him that one day i'd make him a cosplay so he could be out and about "as himself" for a day or two. during anime boston '22, on a bit of friday and for all of sunday, he got to do that. he participated in the death match and cosplay chess, while i got to do karaoke that saturday, if you ever see me cosplaying majima goro, surprise, it's him, not me.

you sound insane

my therapist says it's better this way.

neat. so go ahead and tell us about him!

majima kept a lot of personality from the game character. he's charismatic, confident, tenacious, and VERY sure of himself. majima taught me that cringe is DEAD, and that you should just go out and have fun and not care about what others think (as long as nobody's getting hurt without being warned first). he's intensely loyal to the people he cares about, and he's driven me to take care of myself too, as well as to put myself first, a "don't light yourself on fire to keep others warm" type of deal. in a way, having majima around is like having a constant life coach and motivator.over the time he's spent around, he's shared my love of dancing and karaoke, as well as gained a serious appreciation for Wham! and a lot of 80s pop. he watches baseball when we get time, usually rooting for either the red sox or the angels. if he finds out you like the yankees he will stop speaking to you immediately.much like his game counterpart, he still has a passion for any sort of fighting, martial arts, or the like. if you ever run into him at a convention and you're cosplaying kiryu, i'm sorry in advance. i'm so, so, so sorry.

will this affect how you post to social media going forward? how will we know who is who?

it's going to be staying the same. my twitter is my twitter, he doesn't use it. same goes for all my other socials. we're not doing a "majima signs off with (funkyemoji)" type of deal. if majima ever wants to post, he'll say it's him.
as for in person, we're pretty distinct from one another 90% of the time. at the end of the day, if you get confused, you can always just ask "which one are you". we won't get offended.

how do you guys do pronouns?

we handle pronouns the same way two separate people would usually handle pronouns. if you're talking about the both of us, they/them is fine. majima uses he/him pronouns and i (bread) use she/her pronouns. neither of us will get upset if you mess up, so don't worry about it too much.

i still have a few questions about this

no big deal, it's a lot, and i assume there'll be questions left that i didn't answer here. don't be shy and feel free to reach out to me in DMs on my twitter @compressedbread.
